Trundle Bed Mattresses – Tips and Hints
When you begin shopping for trundle bed mattresses, it is helpful to know something about the beds, their history, and their normal use so that you can make an informed decision on which mattress would be the best one. Trundle beds are special beds that are built low to the ground. They are built onto rollers or casters, and can be rolled beneath a regular bed to save space when they are not being used.
Trundle beds get their name from the trundles, another name for casters, that are used to move them back and forth. Historically, trundle beds were originally made for servants, so that they were able to sleep as close to their employers as possible in case they were needed in the middle of the night.

Trundle beds are not just for young children. At one time, trundle beds were only made in small sizes. The top bed was a twin size, and the bottom bed was slightly smaller, making it difficult to find trundle bed mattresses that would fit the bottom. Nowadays, trundle beds can come in many different sizes. Full, King and queen size trundle beds are not uncommon, although the lower bed is still a twin size. This makes the trundle bed a most versatile piece of furniture for your home.
When you get ready to buy a mattress, there are a few things you should know. Trundle bed mattresses should be about 8 inches thick. Box springs normally are not required with a trundle bed, but some of the newer varieties can include them. There are specially designed innerspring mattresses that are the right thickness and can be used either on the main bed or the pull-out bed. Almost any twin size mattress should work with a trundle bed, but it can depend on the individual frame of your bed.
Since you want to be sure to get a proper fit, you should take the measurements of the pull-out part of your trundle bed before you start shopping. You should use the same type of mattress on both the top and the bottom of your trundle bed, especially if it is a pop-up design. By doing so, you ensure that the bed will be level when both trundle bed mattresses are used at the same time. You can choose between innerspring, memory foam, or air mattresses for your trundle bed in order to have the perfect sleep surface for you, your family, or your guests.
